Olfactory Ensheathing Cells for Spinal Cord Injury: The Cellular Superpowers for Nerve Repair

نویسندگان

چکیده

Neurotrauma injuries are notoriously difficult to deal with both clinically as well experimentally, the cellular and molecular events ensuing after injury complicate neuroinflammatory processes. Spinal cord further complicated by formation of scars at sites, which can provide a physical barrier repair. The lack effective clinical therapy for spinal underscores need experimental approaches generate therapies. To repair injury, cell transplantation offers potential replace lost cells create permissive bridge promote neural regeneration across site. Olfactory ensheathing (OECs), glia olfactory nerve, stand apart from other candidate types due their innate natural abilities manage nerve regeneration. This is evidenced physiological role in daily maintenance nerve. Here, we explain properties relation most relevant attributes, including interactions, phagocytosis, migration, axonal guidance support, modulation neuroinflammation. We highlight some critical drawbacks current identify ways address them.

Olfactory ensheathing cells and spinal cord repair.

The olfactory ensheathing cell is a specialized glial cell that assists in growth of the axons of the olfactory sensory neurons as they are generated and regenerated throughout adult life. There is increasing evidence in animal models that transplantation of olfactory ensheathing cell promotes recovery after transplantation into the injured spinal cord. Olfactory ensheathing cell transplants ha...

Repair of Spinal Cord Injury by Co-Transplantation of embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Motor Neuron and Olfactory Ensheathing Cell

Background: The failure of regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI) has been attributed to axonal demyelination and neuronal death. Cellular replacement and white matter regeneration are both necessary for SCI repair. In this study, we evaluated the co-transplantation of olfactory ensheathing cells (OEC) and embryonic stem (ES) cell-derived motor neurons (ESMN) on contused SCI. Methods: OEC...

Minocycline Enhance Restorative Ability of Olfactory Ensheathing Cells by Upregulation of BDNF and GDNF Expression After Spinal Cord Injury

Purpose: Spinal cord injury is a global public health issue that results in extensive neuronal degeneration, axonal and myelin loss and severe functional deficits. Neurotrophic factors are potential treatment for reducing secondary damage, promoting axon growth, and are responsible for inducing myelination after injury. Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) and minocycline have been shown to promo...

Olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord repair: crucial differences between subpopulations of the glia

OECs for spinal cord repair: Is repairing the injured spinal cord by olfactory ensheathing cell (OEC) transplantation possible? A recent human trial in which a paralysed man regained some function after transplantation of partially purified OECs suggests that this therapy may be a successful approach (Tabakow et al., 2014). In another human trial in which olfactory mucosa lamina propria was tra...
